July 24, 2007

By Antony Bruno, Denver

MediaNet, a provider of backend technology that powers many of today's digital music services and formerly known as MusicNet, now has more than 1 million tracks available for purchase without DRM protection.

The company has DRM-free licensing deals with not only EMI Music Group, but also several independent labels such as Nettwerk Music Group, and labels represented by DMGI and IRIS.

Digital music services such as MTV's Urge, Yahoo Music Unlimited and Microsoft's Zune Marketplace all use the MediaNet platform, but there is no indication as to when or whether any of them will begin offering DRM-free track sales.
