Guy groups, long an R&B staple, have been missing in action of late. Trey Smoov hopes to change that scenario. The Samoan trio is gaining spins across the country with "The Flyest," the first single from the group's debut album "Misconception" (Hammock-Smoov Out Ent.).

Comprised of best friends Mack Daddy, YC and Vocalz, Trey Smoov laces smooth, distinctive harmonies against a melodic melding of R&B/ hip-hop, gospel, reggae and a dash of old-school soul for a fresh, contemporary sound. Hailing from Carson, Calif., the group came together while attending community college. When a YouTube video the trio taped ("Samoans Singing") began generating comments from across the country, Trey Smoov began taking shape.

The group became even more determined to pursue its dream after Mack Daddy was diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in 2008. "I didn't know the tumor would be a blessing in disguise," says Mack Daddy, who is currently in full remission. "Now I know God had other goals for me and my brothers to fulfill, and it's music. There's an open lane right now for us." The singing and songwriting trio released "Misconception" in Feb. 2009-the same month that Mack Daddy received his final chemotherapy treatment.

Among the stations currently playing mid-tempo groove "The Flyest" are KJLH Los Angeles, WQUE New Orleans, KKDA Dallas, KVSP Oklahoma City, KIPR Little Rock, WDKX, Rochester, NY and Music Choice. Featuring cameos from Mack 10 and actor Tiny "D-Bo" Lister, "The Flyest" video is being serviced this week to major networks and 140 regional shows. Released via 101 Distribution, "Misconception" (treysmoov.com) is available through iTunes, Rhapsody and other digital outlets. Trey Smoov, who has done shows with Mint Condition, Bobby Valentino and Pleasure P, is gearing up for a series of performances that will be announced shortly.
