While the CD is in the second year of a precipitous decline—sales are down 16.7% so far this year, on top of 2007's 18.8% drop—retailers, labels and distribution executives alike say that the growth of the niche business of vinyl and digital directives may be a heartening turn of events in the industry.
"Last year [everyone] was pitching their tethered CD product," Newbury Comics CEO Mike Dreese said.
Members of the digital community urged labels to stop looking at CDs or litigation as a market solution and instead focus on "competing with free."
