Shunichi Tokura has been elected chairman of the Japanese Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers (JASRAC).

Tokura started in the role on Aug. 12 with his term of office concluding March 2012. JASRAC's former chairman Toru Funamura will stay on at the society in the role of honorary chairman.

Tokura, who regularly composes scores for film and TV, is a past recipient of the Japan Record award, Nihon Kayo Taisho (Japan Popular Song Award), and the best composer award at the Tokyo Music Festival.

He is also a managing director for the Japan Composer's Association, a director for the All Japan Authors and Composers' Association and the Japan Composers & Arrangers Association, and an advisor to the Song Writer's Union of Japan.

A general meeting of JASRAC members is scheduled to be held Sept. 29 during which new executive officers will be elected.
