Universal Strikes Deal For TDC's Play

May 09, 2008

By By Charles Ferro, Copenhagen

Danish Internet service provider TDC has reached a content licensing agreement with Universal Music for its free music download service Play. The latest deal gives Play the full-house of major labels.

The service was launched on April 1 with three of the four giant labels on board, and now boasts 95% of the music available on the Danish market, according to TDC.

Play is free to all subscribers of TDC's mobile phone and broadband services. Subscribers have unlimited, free-of-charge access to download tracks, which cannot be burned to CD or transferred. If subscription ends, the Play service ceases immediately.

TDC says the amount of music downloaded via Play in the first month is equal to a threefold increase in music sales, based on first-month statistics against last year's annual average.
