Alltel Lauches Steaming, Download Service

January 15, 2008

By By Antony Bruno, Denver

Wireless operator Alltel introduced a new music service that allows customers to stream and download DRM-free digital music files from their home computer to their mobile phone.

The service is called "Music, powered by Celltop" which is based on mSpot's Remix technology. It allows users to scroll through their music library, and stream any song they choose while it's downloading to the device. Once downloaded, the song is stored on the phone's memory card and available to play at any point afterwards (similar to a wireless sideloading system).

Alltel is charging customers $4 a month for the service, which is available only to Motorola MOTOROKR users, or $10 for a three-month subscription.
