ASCAP To Honor Jazz Composers

February 04, 2009

By By Ed Christman, N.Y.

The Young Jazz Composers Awards, created to encourage gifted jazz composers throughout the United States, will be handed out June 16 at the annual ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame ceremony, which will be held in The Allen Room, Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

"The young jazz creators recognized through this program represent the
future of this uniquely American art form," said ASCAP Foundation president Marilyn Bergman. The recipients, who receive cash awards, range in age from 15 to 29. They are selected through a juried national competition. The awards were created in 2002 and since their inception have been sponsored by Gibson Foundation, the philanthropic division of musical giant Gibson Guitar. For a list of receipients, click here.
