Reed Pulls Plug On 'Amazia' Plans
May 27, 2008 - Global

By Janine Stein, The Hollywood Reporter

The clash of Asian television trade shows is believed to have ended, with exhibition organizer Reed Midem pulling the plug on plans for the inaugural Asian multi-media event Amazia, market sources said over the weekend.

"AMAZIA set for axe," read a headline on Reed's own Television Asia Web site. A spokesman at the company's Paris headquarters said an official announcement would be made Tuesday.

The first edition of Amazia, which for months had promised a multi-media, multi-platform focus, was scheduled to take place in Hong Kong November 17-20.

The Paris-based organization’s exit from the regional television show line-up clears the way for Reed’s sister show, the eight-year-old Asia Television Forum, to maintain dominance.

The ATF, held December 10-12, is organized by the Singapore-based Reed Exhibitions Singapore.

Industry sources said at the weekend that the two shows would have split the television market, putting both events in jeopardy, rather than attract new
multimedia money.

Two shows planned by the same parent company also confused the market, and left exhibitors wondering which to join, they said.

Would-be Amazia exhibitors included Sony Pictures Television International, MGM, Mondo TV, Entertainment Rights, Endemol, Lionsgate, Televisa, Deutsche Welle, and TV Azteca.

Asian companies included Japan’s Toei Animation and Hong Kong’s Phoenix Satellite TV.

The planned Amazia event also had confirmed high-profile keynote speakers such as MGM’s Harry Sloane.
