Spotify Signs IODA Deal For 2 Million Tracks
July 21, 2009 - Global | Digital and Mobile

By Andre Paine, London

Spotify has signed with IODA to bring the digital distributor's catalog to the ad-funded free streaming service.

IODA will provide Spotify users with music drawn from a catalog of nearly 2 million tracks from over 50 countries. Artists covered include the Prodigy, Burial, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Bashy, Frank Black, Vieux Farka Touré and Broken Social Scene.

IODA also brings its international partners into the deal, including Nordic territory partner Bonnier Amigo Music Group.

"Spotify has created a compelling product that redefines the notion of user-friendly and clearly speaks to the desires of the music fan," said IODA founder and CEO Kevin Arnold in a statement. "We've seen a lot of promise from ad-supported revenue models. Spotify is exciting and unique in that the promise is backed up with a tangible subscription model and a slew of fresh ideas on how to grow the platform."

Daniel Ek, CEO and founder of Spotify, added: "One of the challenges all music services face is providing a wide range of music for users of all conceivable tastes. We've worked hard to add classical, punk and indie content from different sources and this deal with IODA is another leap forward in our mission to provide users with the biggest, most diverse musical catalogue on the planet."

The company, based in London and Stockholm, offers ad-funded free streaming services for registered users in the U.K., Sweden, Norway, Finland, France and Spain, while a premium service, priced £9.99 ($16.40) a month, is additionally available in those countries as well as various other European territories.

It is not yet available in the U.S. though there are plans to launch there.

Spotify has also partnered with download store 7digital to offer a-la-carte downloads.
