France's SPPF Pacts With Deezer For SmartPlaylist
October 17, 2007 - Global | Digital and Mobile

By Aymeric Pichevin, Paris

French independent labels collecting society SPPF has forged a content deal with Paris-based on-demand streaming company Deezer for its SmartPlaylist interactive Web casting service.

SmartPlaylist allows users to stream music programs based on their own tastes, thanks to its in-house recommendation software tool.

"This is a groundbreaking agreement for us," SPPF director general Jérôme Roger told Billboard.biz. "Given the large number of companies operating similar services, such as Last.fm and others, we intend to sign other agreements of the kind."

Roger says SPPF will get a share of the advertising revenues generated by SmartPlaylist, based on the use of its members' catalog. An undisclosed minimum fee has been set per stream.

"This is a new step in the spread of a legal offer online combining free and paid offers for the public", he added.

In a statement, Deezer co-founder Jonathan Benassaya said: "Signing this agreement is a milestone for Deezer's growth. With SmartPlaylist, we add a highly expected functionality that allows [consumers to] discover a wide array of artists."

The new agreement supports Deezer's recent vow to go legitimate. Last week, Deezer announced a deal with Sony BMG for the use of its catalog for its ad-supported on-demand streaming service.
