Simple Minds Hit 30
March 07, 2008 - Global | Touring

By Andre Paine, London

Veteran Scottish rock act Simple Minds is to mark its 30th anniversary with six U.K. performances of the critically-lauded 1982 album "New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)."

The group has announced shows in six British cities during November and December, ending in its home city of Glasgow. The band's current line-up includes founder members Jim Kerr (vocals) and Charlie Burchill (guitar) plus drummer Mel Gaynor who made his debut with the band on "New Gold Dream" (Virgin). That album provided the band with its first two U.K. Top 20 singles, "Promised You A Miracle" and "Glittering Prize."

The band was initially formed as Johnny & the Self Abusers in 1977, releasing one single before changing its name to Simple Minds and making its debut as such in January 1978. Its last album, "Black & White 050505," was released on Sanctuary in 2005; the band is now on Universal's W14 imprint.

Tickets go on sale today for the shows at Manchester MEN Arena (Nov. 27), Birmingham N.E.C. (Nov. 28), Wembley Arena (Nov. 29), Sheffield Arena (Dec. 1), Cardiff Arena (Dec. 2) and Glasgow S.E.C.C. (Dec. 4).

In addition to performing "New Gold Dream" in its entirety for the first time, Kerr says: "the concerts will reflect our entire musical journey from day one to the current phase of creativity." He adds: "There is no better way of announcing to the world that Simple Minds continues to embrace an uplifting musical spirit and enthusiasm that defined our best work."

The U.K. shows are booked by John Giddings at London-based Solo; the promoter is Danny Betesh of Kennedy Street.

Outside the U.K., Kerr and Burchill will play a number of previously announced shows as part of the long-established Night of the Proms series of multi-artist concerts in Belgium, France and Spain. Those events will take place in April, October and November; they will, however, be brief sets, unrelated to the anniversary tour.
