Report: RIAA Ends MediaSentry Deal
January 05, 2009 - Digital and Mobile

By Antony Bruno, Denver

In addition to ending its litigation campaign against file trading music fans, the RIAA reportedly is ending its relationship with the controversial MediaSentry.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the RIAA will no longer use MediaSentry to identify music fans who have uploaded music to P2P networks.

Because MediaSentry didn't track or identify the actual downloaders of music files, the RIAA focused its legal campaign on those who made the files available, a strategy that has come under legal attack of late.

Additionally, several states have questioned the investigation methods of the company, claiming it lacked sufficient licenses to operate as a de-facto private investigator.

The RIAA now plans a new tactic of working with ISPs to target pirates Internet access accounts, and said it will opt for Danish firm DtecNet Software to ID infringing users.
