Yahoo, iTunes Japan Link For One-Click Access
June 14, 2007 - Digital and Mobile | Global

By Steve McClure, Tokyo

Yahoo Japan and iTunes Japan have entered into a deal that will give users one-click access from Yahoo Japan music-related sites to the iTunes music store, where they can preview and download music and videos. The deal, which is billed as a first, was announced today (June 14) and takes effect immediately.

Yahoo Japan previously offered a similar feature in cooperation with Mora, a music-download service operated by Sony Music Entertainment (Japan)-affiliated content aggregator Label Gate.

Yahoo and iTunes will also offer Japanese fans exclusive tracks by several domestic acts, including DefTech, Ai, Quruli and Remioromen.

"We're very excited to partner with Yahoo Japan, the most popular search site in Japan," Eddy Cue, VP at iTunes, tells Billboard.biz. "We look at this as a great opportunity -- the synergy between us and Yahoo is great."

Cue says iTunes has no current plans for similar deals in other territories.

"With over 40 million Yahoo Japan users we've become one of the most popular places for people to discover great new music," Yahoo Japan president/CEO Masahiro Inoue said in a statement. "And we think Yahoo Japan users are going to love having the iTunes Store only one click away from Yahoo!"

The iTunes Store in Japan now features a catalog of more than 4 million songs, 5,000 music videos, Disney and Pixar short films, 100,000 podcasts and 25,000 audiobooks. More than 90% of the songs available through the download service are priced at 150 yen ($1.23) each.
