Average Ratings Down, Fonsi Up At Premios Juventud
July 17, 2009 - Latin

By Ayala Ben-Yehuda, L.A.

Luis Fonsi was the big winner at Univision's Premios Juventud last night, snapping up 10 trophies - a record for a single year in the youth-oriented entertainment show's six-year history.

Among the awards Fonsi won were Red Hot Artist, Favorite Pop Artist and CD To Die For (his latest, "Palabras del Silencio"). Fonsi and several other artists, including the show's co-host Pee Wee, debuted performances of new singles on the broadcast.

The show gives awards in music, movies, fashion, sports and pop culture. Nominations and winners are determined by online voting at Univision.com. Other winners were reggaeton duo Wisin & Yandel, for favorite urban artist and best ringtone ("Me Estas Tentando"), and defunct pop group RBD for favorite concert.

The show averaged 4.15 million viewers this year, according to Nielsen, down from last year's 5.2 million average. Even with last year's best-ever ratings, the awards led to album sales gains for just a handful of artists.
