Jason Herskowitz, the former VP of product management at Total Music, has joined P2P service LimeWire with the same title.
The move has generated some controversy, considering he’s moved from a label-run digital music service to an unauthorized P2P network, but it really shouldn’t be surprising.
LimeWire is looking for ways to work with the music industry, launching, for instance, an a la carte paid download service which recently added thousands of tracks through deals with Skint/Loaded, Alpha Pup, and Mbop Digital, among others. This adds to existing partnerships with The Orchard, IODA, Redeye Distribution, Nettwerk Music Group, IRIA, and others.
Also, LimeWire has been in talks with the music industry for years about settling their differences and perhaps striking a licensing deal for an ad-supported service. That possibility remains in the rumor stage for now, but it’s no secret LimeWire aims to be more than a pirate hangout.
