Chinese Music Industry Urges Action Against Baidu
June 03, 2008 - Global

By Berwin Song, Beijing

A coalition of leading music-industry companies and associations on June 3 issued a statement calling on major companies to review their relations with Beijing-based Internet portal Baidu due to its policy of providing “deep links” to Web sites offering unauthorized music downloads.

Comprising the coalition are the Music Copyright Society of China (MCSC), the China Audio-Video Copyright Association and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The statement was signed by several record labels and music publishers who claim to represent over 80% of the Chinese music market, including Universal Music Publishing, Warner-Chappell Music, EMI Music Publishing, Linfair Music, Linfair Music Publishing, Seed Music, Taihe Rye Music, R2G, Zhu Shu Fang Music, Yue Lin Music, Universal Music, Sony BMG and Warner Music.

They urge companies to support copyright through practical action, and avoid providing any direct or indirect financial support to copyright infringers. By doing that, they say, companies will prevent their brand equity from being “misused and diluted.”

“Resolutely countering Baidu, which is the largest and most incorrigible purveyor of pirated music in China, has become a common goal in China,” said MCSC Director-General Qu Jing Ming at a press conference held June 3 at the MCSC’s Beijing office.
