Because Acquires 'My Way' Co-publisher
November 25, 2009 - Global | Publishing

By Aymeric Pichevin, Paris

Paris-based independent music group Because announced the acquisition, through a holding company, of French publisher Jeune Musique.

Created in 1967 by French superstar Claude François, Jeune Musique's catalog includes co-publishing rights on some of François' hits such as "Alexandrie Alexandra", "Magnolias for Ever" and "Comme d'Habitude."

The latter was adapted in English by Paul Anka under the title "My Way," made famous by Frank Sinatra and covered by stars such as Elvis Presley, Julio Iglesias, Celine Dion, Sid Vicious, Luciano Pavarotti and Robbie Williams.

Jeune Musique is co-publisher of "My Way."

Besides Because, the holding company involved in the buyout includes Xavier Niel, majority shareholder of Iliad, which operates French ISP Free. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

Claude François Jr., the son of Claude François, will maintain a minority stake in Jeune Musique. The holding company intends to acquire other publishing catalogs, a statement issued by Because says.
