Lady Gaga Tops BBC Interactive Glasto Results
July 09, 2009 - Global | Digital and Mobile | Rock and Pop

By Andre Paine, London

Lady Gaga was the most popular artist on the BBC's online Glastonbury service, as the U.K. broadcaster achieved record numbers for its interactive coverage of the British festival.

Viewers could watch 'on demand' through the dedicated Web site or by pressing the red button on their remotes to access various performances showing on digital TV. Highlights of performances were available on TV and online in the U.K. on the weekend of the festival, June 26 to June 28, and the following week; content is still available on the Web site for U.K. users.

The BBC's festival Web site, which offered more than 60 acts playing the main stages, received 7.2 million video requests, with Lady Gaga's performance proving the biggest draw with 1.3 million requests. Lily Allen was next with 762,000 requests followed by Blur with 538,000 requests. The online total is a four-fold increase on 2008, where the top artist was headliner Jay Z, with 119,000 requests.

The Web site peaked at 229,000 daily unique users on June 27, compared with 175,000 daily unique users last year; in the week up to June 27, the BBC Glastonbury Web site had 437,000 unique users compared with 326,000 last year.

Record audiences used the red button to see coverage of the festival, with more than 6.1 million watching on digital TV, making it the most popular music event shown on the BBC's red button.

"I'm delighted with these figures and very proud of what we've delivered this year," said Mark Friend, controller of multiplatform and Interactive at BBC audio & music (A&M), in a statement. "We are seeing an amazing reaction from our audience to the multiplatform approach that we are pursuing, especially the demand for video. We wanted to make sure our audiences could enjoy the festival even if they weren't there and catch up with their favorite acts when it suited them."

Over the Glastonbury weekend of June, 16.33 million viewers tuned into television coverage of the event on BBC Two, Three and Four.
