Hal Leonard Corp Buys Shawnee Press
June 19, 2009 - Publishing

By Ed Christman, N.Y.

The Hal Leonard Corporation has purchased choral, instrumental and school music print publisher Shawnee Press Inc. from the Music Sales Corp. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Shawnee Press was founded in the late 1930s by band leader Fred Waring and some of his friends from the singing group the Pennsylvanian. It was sold to London-based Music Sales in 1989.

Shawnee Press specializes in sacred and secular music for schools and churches. Its divisions include Concert Works Unlimited, GlorySound, Harold Flammer Music, Margun Music, Mark Foster Music, and Wide World Music, while its writers and arrangers include Joseph Martin, Jill and Michael Gallina, Don Besig and Nancy Price.

"The Shawnee name is synonymous with quality," said Keith Mardak, chairman and CEO of Milwaukee-based Hal Leonard. "The addition of these publications and their formidable stable of writers will serve as a perfect complement to our current choral operations."
