Report: Latin Stations Targeted In Payola Investigation

January 26, 2009

By By Ayala Ben-Yehuda, L.A.

Latin radio stations in Texas appear to be among those being investigated in an ongoing FCC probe into payola allegations.

According to the McAllen Monitor, Spanish-language stations in the Rio Grande Valley have received letters of inquiry as well as had meetings with FCC investigators to discuss whether station personnel have been involved in pay-for-play.

The report couldn't confirm whether the Texas probes are part of a wide-ranging FCC investigation, launched in October, of payola allegations made by former Fonovisa promotions VP Daniel Mireles. But Entravision Radio, owner of KNVO-FM Jose 101.1 and KKPS-FM Que Pasa 99.5 in McAllen, reportedly released a statement to the paper that "We're one of a number of broadcasters who have received letters from the FCC on this matter."
