'Cafe de los Maestros' Set For Summer Release

May 29, 2008

By By Ayala Ben-Yehuda, L.A.

"Caf? de los Maestros," a documentary about the making of the 2005 Gustavo Santaolalla-produced tango albums of the same name, will be released in Argentina in June and in Europe in July or August, Santaolalla tells Billboard.biz.

"Caf? de los Maestros" gathered legendary Argentine tango musicians for interviews, recording and a performance at Buenos Aires' Col?n Theater. Santaolalla co-produced the film with Lita Stantic and "Motorcycle Diaries" director Walter Salles. The documentary was directed by Miguel Kohan.

To coincide with the release of the film, the "Caf? de los Maestros" album - previously only available as an Argentine import - will be released internationally by Deutsche Grammophon, says Santaolalla. The two-time Academy Award winner for the scores of "Babel" and "Brokeback Mountain" will also publish a companion book to the movie via his book publishing company.

Santaolalla will be honored as a BMI Icon at the society's Latin awards dinner June 12.
