Report: MySpace Brazil To Shutter

June 26, 2009

By By Leila Cobo, Miami

As part of its worldwide restructuring, MySpace will reportedly shutter its Brazilian operation.

MySpace Brazil's last day will be June 30, according to O Globo and digital blogspot Aliado Digital (powered by Music Ally).

In an earlier press release, MySpace said it would place all existing offices in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, and Spain "under review for possible restructure."

Now, sources say that in addition to Brazil, MySpace's operations in Argentina and Mexico will also shut down.

The decision to shutter Brazil "took us by surprise, because [MySpace] Brazil has been doing well since its first year," MySpace Brazil director of content and new business Angelos Ktenas Jr. was quoted as saying in Aliado Digital. According to Ktenas, the social networking site had grown 400% in less than two years and had 2.5 million local users.

MySpace also shuttered its MySpace Latino offices in Miami, according to sources. Although the MySpace Latino site is still up and running, content has not been refreshed in over a week, as it normally is every Tuesday.
