Latin Briefs: Austin's New Regional Mexican Radio, Manu Chao
November 20, 2009 - Latin

By Ayala Ben-Yehuda, L.A.

-Emmis Communications will unveil a new regional Mexican station in Austin, Texas, on Monday, Nov. 30. The new station will replace an adult-alternative format on 107.1 FM. Beginning today (Nov. 20), the adult-alternative format is simulcasting on both 107.1 and 93.3. At the end of the ten-day transition, the new regional Mexican station will debut on 107.1 while the adult-alternative format will remain at 93.3.

93.3's signal covers a larger area, while 107.1's reaches "Austin’s highest density Hispanic areas including those with the largest Spanish-speaking populations in Central Texas," according to an announcement from KGSR.

The move follows the vacancy created earlier this month when BMP Radio's Austin, Texas, regional Mexican station KHHL (La Ley) flipped to an English-language format.

-mun2 will broadcast Manu Chao's "Baionarena" concert during a one-hour special on Friday, Nov. 27 at midnight ET/PT. The concert, filmed in Bayonne, France, is the subject of the artist's live album and DVD on Nacional Records, out Dec. 1. "Mun2 Presents: Manu Chao" will repeat on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 11 p.m. ET/PT. Holamun2.com will also give away an MP3 from the live album and stream behind-the-scenes footage from the tour DVD.
