!K7 Strikes Gold Dust With Urban Label
April 30, 2008 - Global | RB Hip-Hop | Indies

By Lars Brandle, London

Berlin-based indie !K7 Records has added a fifth label to its group, with the urban-oriented Gold Dust Media.

In a statement issued today, !K7 says Gold Dust "offers a new family of dynamic American artists a global platform to release their music through !K7's sales and marketing structure."

First signings include hip hop artists People Under the Stairs, Large Professor, Zion I, and the Outlawz, plus releases from rising performers Brooklyn Academy & 40 Cal from the Diplomats.

Gold Dust Media will sit alongside BBE/Rapster, Ever Records, Strut and !K7, and is A&R'd by Dave Watkins from !K7's New York office.

"At the moment there is no other U.S. label focusing on urban music with an international marketing and distribution network. [Gold Dust] has huge potential," Horst Weidenmueller, CEO !K7 Records, tells Billboard.biz.

The label is also working on a project from Prince Paul entitled "Modest Millionaires," which sees the hip hop producer team with Trugoy and Del the Funky Homosapeien.

Gold Dust will also release a documentary DVD on the Notorious B.I.G., called "Biggie Smalls: The Rap Phenomenon".
