Briefs: Michael Jackson Sales, Jazz Times, Red Mountain
July 15, 2009 - Retail | Touring

By Glenn Peoples, Nashville

-- How did the estimate for Michael Jackson's lifetime sales figure go from 200 million albums to 750 million in recent years? "A likely explanation is that a rough tally of individual songs was misinterpreted or misrepresented to reflect album sales. Such a numerical misstep is surprisingly easy to make in the world of album sales figures, where reliable information is spotty in the U.S., and often nonexistent overseas." (Wall Street Journal)

-- The spending confidence of consumers in the U.S. and Canada, wary of spending money, ranked low in the latest ten-country Nielsen Economic Current. The report tracks retail trends in countries that account for 65% of global GDP. (Nielsen Wire)

-- Jazz Times magazine was acquired by Boston-based Madavor Media and will return in August with ten issues per year. The magazine had previously announced it was suspending publication while it sorted through its financial situation. Madavor Media owns such properties as Doll Reader, Volleyball, Teddy Bear and International Figure Skating. (All About Jazz)

-- Construction has started on an amphitheater in Tuscaloosa, Ala., that will be programmed and operated by Red Mountain Entertainment. The venue is scheduled to open in August 2010. (Tuscaloosa News)
