Two weeks after its June 18 release, Mercedes Sosa’s album “Cantora 2” (Sony) tops Argentina’s sales chart, put out by local recording industry association CAPIF, for the week ending June 27. Like “Cantora” (which this week is at No. 3 on the chart), “Cantora 2” features songs previously recorded by Sosa, this time recorded as duets with a broad palette of artists that include Charly García, Calle 13, Vicentico, Franco de Vita and Joaquín Sabina, among others.
The 74 year-old Sosa is a Latin American icon of folk music and “nueva canción.” In Colombia, singer/songwrtier Andres Cepeda’s “Día Tras Día,” out on indie FM Discos, topped the sales chart for retailer Prodiscos/Tower Records.
